Worship and Christian Education at 2pm Sundays

The Sudanese Fellowship usually have 60-70 people each Sunday, worshipping in the Mabaan language. Approximately thirty children are learning Bible stories in English. WPC worship hosts, teachers and assistants for the children's education program are needed.

Sudanese Fellowship Opportunity

Do you like kids? Are you interested in teaching? Here is a fun opportunity for you! The Sudanese Sunday School needs people to teach the children, along with a Sudanese Leader. Lesson plans and materials are provided. They meet at 2 PM Sunday after-noons (except the first Sunday of the month). Are you available one time a month? More often? Need field experience for a month or two for college classes in educa-tion or international relations? Call Anita Rigstad (801-583-1917 or Rrigstad@msn.com)

Thanks are in order to Brad Rouillard, who prepared a used computer for use at the new Loft desks. His time, expertise, and helpful orientation for the Suda-nese is greatly appreciated!

SUDANESE FELLOWSHIP NEWS

On January 9, 2011 the people of Southern Sudan voted on a referendum for independence. Many refugees here in the U.S. went to designated cities to cast their votes as well. Even if the region of South Sudan gains independence, they face many challenges.

  • 50.6% of the population lives on less than $1.00.
  • One out of seven women who become pregnant will probably die from pregnancy related causes.
  • One of every seven children will die before they are five.
  • Only about 10% of children are fully vaccinated.
  • Malaria is considered hyper-endemic, accounting for more than 40% of all visits to health facilities.
  • More than 50% of the popula-tion does not have access to safe drinking water.
  • 85% of adults do not know how to read or write.

We therefore, rejoice that the Sudanese Fellowship is doing so well. Sixty-five joined together at Wasatch Church on Christmas day to celebrate the birth of Christ. After worship they shared a deli-cious meal, sang, danced, drummed, and played games.

NEW VENTURE
Anita Rigstad

Thanks be to God for WPC’s contributions of over $2200 for food at Christmas time. At this difficult financial time, that was a particularly gracious act. Now here’s a difficult act to consider at a difficult time, which will bring grace to our Sudanese friends. Help us identify WPC’s human resources to provide work sites, job coaching, or mentors.

We are exploring ways to collaborate with the Refugee Services/Workforce Services to increase the marketable job skills for the Sudanes.

Do you or someone you know have job/hobby skills which might translate to job skills, e.g. yard work, home maintenance, painting, construction, car or machine repair, child care, whatever? The state provides training for mentors and job coaches.

Do you know of possible job sites: the church or some company, someone’s home in need of work, a company open to hiring refugees? The state helps develop training and support for employment.

Financial support for hospital in Sudan or local Sudanese

One family was unable to pay rent, due to unemployment. Eviction was prevented by a loan to pay back rent. Contributions can be made to WPC: Sudanese # 800648 for Emergency Fund for local families or for Hope Village at Doro Hospital in Sudan.
