INFORMATION SHEET FOR WPC VOLUNTEERS

Evening Hosts
5:30 PM - 8:30 PM

The evening host is the face and organizing force of Family Promise each evening. The host makes the families feel welcome and addresses issues as they come up. Familiarity with the program and facilities is important. An FP coordinator is available as backup, but it is expected, that with the information in the football (binder with keys and information), and good judgment, the needs of the guests and the program can be addressed by the host. The host is assisted by the dinner providers, and a differing cast of volunteers who will help with entertainment and socializing until the host is relieved by the overnight host at 8:30. The evening host needs to arrive by 5:30 so that the Volunteer who has let the families back into the building can leave. You will need to receive the football with the keys at this time.

Guest Schedule Information:

SUNDAY: The families arrive at Wasatch at approximately 3:00 PM. The families will have an orientation covering the rules as they apply to Wasatch, settle into their assigned rooms, and have free time until dinner, which on Sunday is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

WEEKDAYS: The families have had a long day. They left Wasatch at 7:00 A.M. for work, looking for work, training, or school. There will be considerable variation among individuals concerning their desire for social interaction.

SATURDAY: The daytime host or hosts on Saturday will offer some form of outing or activities for the families or children, but no one is required to participate. Families may leave for the day to engage in social or shopping activities.

GUIDELINES:
  1. Please arrive by 5:30 PM.and be available to actively interact with families and coordinate with the dinner providers. This is also a good time to determine whether there
  2. are outstanding issues from the morning or previous night that need to be addressed. This may involve communicating with the coordinator regarding food needs for breakfast or lunch supplies, addressing personality or rule compliance issues, or other coordination issues.
  3. Make yourself a nametag and introduce yourself. Familiarize yourself with the guests' names.
  4. The library is the lounge area for TV viewing and games for children are also located there. Active play may occur in the gym or the playground. Depending on light and temperature, supervised play in the park may also be appropriate.
  5.   After meals it is appropriate to ask the guest for assistance.
  6. Guests will serve themselves buffet style from the kitchen food service window. Glasses, plates, utensils, and condiments are set out at the window. Water, milk, etc. can be placed on the tables. Encourage toddlers to use cups with lids.
  7. Depending on the families' preferences, a pot of coffee should be made before dinner and a pot of hot water for tea or cocoa.
  8. Encourage the dinner servers to eat with you and the families. This opportunity for fellowship is important for all.
  9. To provide the opportunity for a quality dining experience, announce that dinner will be served when all have arrived, and are ready for a short blessing. Gather all together including the servers, and provide a short nondenominational blessing.
  10. Assist and encourage guests to assist the dinner servers in cleaning up and washing dishes, so that the servers may leave to go home to their families. Encourage, but do not insist that guest families prepare their lunches for the following day, which can be stored in the refrigerator, so as to avoid crowded preparation in the morning.
  11. When the Overnight Host arrives, give them the football with the keys, and let them know of any issues they may face during the night. Introduce the Overnight Host to the families.
