Family Promise - Breakfast Hosts
6:00 - 7:00 a.m.
This position is rarely filled on weekdays because the overnight host will generally fill this need.
Guests will be awakened at 0600 by the overnight hosts, and are expected to leave the church by 0700. They may make their own breakfast and a sack lunch before leaving. Your job is simply to facilitate this meal prep while making them feel welcome in our church. Guidelines are listed below; feel free to use your imagination and initiative to problem-solve. Generally, the families don't all eat at the same time, since some leave early for work, and others have trouble awakening teens and show at the last minute and take food with them. Some will make their lunches the night before and store them in the big refrigerator. The Interfaith Network will sometimes have a van which arrives at the church at 0700 (Monday through Friday) to pick them up for transportation to work, school, or the Interfaith office; some families have their own cars. If the van is unavailable, the WPC coordinator will have arranged provided bus schedules.
Guidelines
- Please arrive at 0600 weekdays, and 1000 weekends. The overnight hosts will unlock the door on the administrative level. They will also give you the key and cell phone, and communicate any problems which may have occurred overnight. Other communications will be recorded in the appropriate section of the "football", a binder with policies, procedures, and other materials which is "handed off' between members of changing shifts. Arrangements will be made and communicated to you or your fellow shift-volunteers regarding handoff of these materials to the "mother-hen" volunteer who will open up the church for the guests at 1700. If these arrangements aren't clear at the end of the shift, please call the coordinator on-call, which is listed in the schedule in the football for advice.
- Make yourself a nametag, and sign the log and time of arrival and departure in the kitchen.
- Make a pot of coffee and a pitcher of juice; check the frig for left-over juice. Set our silverware, plates, bowls, and cups, glasses on the kitchen counter. Encourage toddlers to use cups with lids. Set out breakfast food - cereal, milk, juice, fruit, bread, butter, and jam. Set out the toaster. Set out materials for making sack lunches - cold cuts, bread, mayo/mustard/ PBJ, fruit, cookies (some guests will have already make them). On weekends, volunteers may want to prepare a hot breakfast for up to 20 in the kitchen. Because lots of guests want to sleep in, don't make anything ahead of time, unless you can quickly re-warm it, when guests arrive.
- Cleanup after breakfast, including dishes, and wipe off the tables, chairs, and put any toys Away (generally guest will help with this). Before leaving on weekdays, be sure the families have all left, too. Make a quick note in the log re: how things went, and any info which may be useful to the next shift. Feel free to call the coordinator on call if you've noted anything you think is important to communicate verbally before the next shift.
THANKS FOR VOLUNTEERING AND THE HOSPITALITY YOU SHOW!!!
