"Behold, I Bring You Good Tidings of Great Joy"
Last week we used van Gogh’s painting, Starry Night, to give us a vision of the kind of stars that the magi might have appreciated. This week, in order to understand the shepherds in a fresh way, we are looking at Van Gogh’s painting he himself titled, The Potato Eaters. It’s a very dark painting. The people are almost cartoonish. It’s so different from the brightly colored celebrations of life that he created that made him known to us as a master. But even when he was painting Starry Night and the bright yellow house, and those cypress trees we know him so well for today, he spoke very fondly to his brother and others of The Potato Eaters.
