TRANSITIONS IN CHILDREN'S MINISTRY DIRECTOR

I am so honored to be Interim CM Director! It has been so rewarding and fun to see our children learn about Christ and grow in their faith over the last couple of years that I have been involved in volunteering in Children's Ministry at Wasatch. I am excited to serve WPC in this new role! Hilary left some very big shoes to fill but I will do my best. Please feel free to contact me at slewis@wpcslc.org.

SUNDAY SCHOOL STARTED YESTERDAY
I hope everyone has settled into the new school year. It is hard to believe summer is ending and Fall is upon us! Our goal this Fall is to learn how and why we worship.

  • Kindergarten - 2nd grade will continue to use the curriculum by Spark House called Activate Faith.

  • 3rd-6th grade will use a new curriculum by GenOn Ministries called Faith for Life. We will be talking each week in our large group session about a different component of our order of service to help engage the children in the worship service.

On Sunday mornings, you can either bring your child to the CM Lounge (room 131) or I will gather kids up from the fellowship hall at 10:10 a.m. We will have a large group session for about 10-15 minutes and then split into our smaller classes for a lesson, crafts, and games.

3-5 year olds are welcome in the nursery for a lesson led by our fantastic nursery caregivers. Childcare is also provided for infants and children less than 5 during both worship services. However, all children are welcome to make their joyful noises in the sanctuary while worshiping with their families.
K-2nd grade will be in the Art Room (rm 126).
3rd-4th grade will be in the Theater Room (rm 128).
5-6th grade aka Club 56 will be in the CM Lounge (rm 131).

We are still in need of teachers for 3rd-4th grade and Club 56. Please let me know if you are able to teach!

THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN
For the safety of our children, we ask that children are not allowed unattended in the gym, preschool playground, or youth Loft. If you have a child in K-4th grade, please either pick them up from their classroom, arrange for an older sibling to pick them up, or instruct them to wait until their class is dismissed and one of the Sunday School teachers will bring them up to the fellowship hall to meet you.

On that same note, WPC devised a Child Protection Policy last year. In order to ensure a safe environment we ask that all volunteers in the CM program throughout the year complete a consent for background check. I will have forms available on Sunday to complete.

ACOLYTES
This Sunday, we will be talking about acolytes in our large group discussion. Afterwards, I will take any 3rd-6th graders who are interested in acolyting (and have not done it before) into the sanctuary to show them what to do and let them practice. In order to make sure things are a little more organized, there will be a sign up for acolytes in the fellowship hall. Look for the "let your light shine" poster and clipboard in the fellowship hall if your child is in 3rd-6th grade and interested in acolyting.

CHRISTMAS PLAY THIS SUNDAY!
We won't have Sunday School classes this week due to the Christmas Play.

Please have your child gather in their Sunday School classrooms between 8:50 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. The first thing they need to do is put on their costumes. If you can stay to help them do this, that would be great. We will have teachers and parent volunteers on hand to help, also. Then, we will gather together and practice the songs once. We will also have holiday crafts and games to occupy the children before the play.  For the 9:00 a.m. worship service, the play will happen after the sermon, at about 9:45 a.m.

At the end of the 9:00 a.m. worship service, after the play, the children will be walked back downstairs and to their classrooms. They can take off costume pieces if desired. Then everyone will go to the Club 56 Lounge, where there will be a snack and a movie.  The play will happen again, at the beginning of the 11:15 a.m. worship service.

At about 11:35 a.m., the play will be over, and everyone should head down to their classrooms and take off and turn in all costume pieces. Volunteers will be on hand to assist in getting costumes back into labeled bins and returning kids to their parents.

NARRATOR PRACTICE
Parents of narrators, PLEASE help your child practice reading their part very slowly and clearly.  Practice makes a big difference at this age.  And being able to understand the narrators makes a big difference to the congregation, particularly the elderly, that morning.

CHILDREN'S CHOIR
A reminder that all kids are invited to join the WPC Children's Choir for a few weeks of practice, followed by a performance at the 7:00 p.m. service on Christmas Eve.  We will try and squeeze in some choir practice this Sunday, while the children are downstairs between runs of the Christmas Play. We encourage children to also practice at home.  The song is "Love Has Come" and should be fairly easy for all. To access the lyrics, click here: Lyrics

To access an audio recording of the song, see click here: Audio Recording

CLUB 56 CHRISTMAS PARTY
A reminder that our 5th and 6th graders have a Christmas gathering at 12:00 p.m. in the Lounge, following the play practice this Saturday.  Club 56 parents should have received a separate email about the party.  If you didn't, please let Stasha Lewis know at dr.stasha.lewis@gmail.com.

Blessings,

CHRISTMAS PLAY INFORMATION
This year the play will be held Sunday, December 16 at the end of the 9 a.m. and beginning of the 11:15 worship services, with practice being held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 15.
If your child(ren) will participate, please fill out the form below. If you have multiple children please fill out one form for each of them.  This will help me organize costumes and plan for the fun! Christmas Play Sign Up

As is tradition, Club 56 kids are invited to sign up to be narrators (but can be other roles if they don't wish to have a speaking part), and I will do my best to give everyone their preferred role at least for one of the two services.

We will be practicing the songs during chapel time each Sunday from now through the 15th, and you can practice on your own at home, too! Click the button below for access to the recordings and lyrics, which are posted on the church website. Christmas Play Songs

CHILDREN'S CHOIR
All kids are invited to join the WPC Children's Choir for a few weeks of practice, then a performance at the 7 p.m. service on Christmas Eve. Thank you to Sabrina Cole and Marian Florence for leading this effort! When Hilary rings the tambourine for Sunday School, choir participants will go to the choir loft with Sabrina and Marian to practice, then will join their Sunday School classes at 10:30.

Finally, a note about my upcoming maternity leave...
As many of you know, Baby Girl Lambert is due to arrive sometime at the end of November or beginning of December. We're going in for a procedure next Wednesday, and she could come as early as then, so I am preparing that this could be my last week on the job for a while.

In preparation for my absence I have worked with Stasha Lewis, CM Committee Chair, and the CM Committee to plan ahead. All events on the CM calendar as well as Sunday School lessons have been prepared, and Stasha and the committee are stepping into greater leadership roles to carry out these plans while I am gone. That said, you might notice we need a few more hands to help at outings and events, and we are in need of Sunday School helpers during Advent (Dec. 2, 9, and 23) and for the block of classes that runs January 6- February 3. All that said, please know I will still be accessible by email and phone while I am gone, and though I might not respond right away, you can still reach me! I'll stay in close touch with Rebecca and Stasha, and am happy to be in contact as needed to help things go well while I'm away.

If everyone lends a hand in some small way, whether in setting up for an event, helping with Sunday School setup, or just checking in with Stasha and offering support every now and then, I think the next few months will run smoothly. I will miss being a part of all the Advent fun, but I am so thankful for everyone's help in making it possible for me to take some leave while we adjust to our growing family- and I look forward to jumping back into things when Lent begins!

Blessings,
Hilary Lambert

Another item discussed at Rally Day that Session and Staff have put in place is a Child Protection Policy that all parents and any volunteer or staff person working with children or youth must read and sign. Hard copies are available at church if you prefer, otherwise, please click the link below, read the policy, and e-sign.  Background Check information and a link to online training will be sent in the coming days.  All parents need to read and sign this new policy.  Thank you!  Child Protection Policy
